Stone Masonry project in Walled Lake, Michigan by Michigan Outdoor Creations
What we build

Stone Masonry

Natural and manufactured stone walls, columns, fire pits, and seating, set on footings below frost with full mortar and drainage detail so nothing shifts when the ground freezes.

The work

Stonework is the part of a backyard people touch and lean on for decades, so it has to be built like it. The difference between masonry that stays tight and masonry that cracks and leans is almost always below the surface: the footing, the drainage, and the mortar detail. Stone set on a shallow or wet base will move the first time the ground freezes hard.

Michigan Outdoor Creations builds natural and manufactured stone masonry across Walled Lake and the Lakes Area — seat walls, columns, pillars, fire pits, fireplaces, outdoor-kitchen surrounds, and stone veneer — on footings poured below the frost line, with weep and drainage detail behind the stone and full mortar work that holds through Michigan winters.

The thing other contractors skip

Why it matters in Michigan.

Masonry that cracks in Michigan was almost always built on a footing that did not go below frost, or behind stone that had nowhere to drain. We pour footings below the 42-inch frost line and build weep and drainage detail behind retaining and seat walls so trapped water cannot freeze and push the stone apart.

Water management is the throughline in everything we build, and it comes from our sister company, Michigan Drainage Solutions, an A+ BBB-rated drainage firm. Stone set with that discipline stays tight and plumb for decades.
